Growing up in Singapore exposes one to many different past times, one in particular would be our fondness for bread or pastries. From the sweetness and coconuty-ness of kaya toast to the dense and seemingly spicy curry puffs. Here are a few bakeries that still have the old school vibe to them.
Ng Kim Lee Confectionary
Situated in the Bukit Timah area, Ng Kim Lee Confectionery is the vintage bakery for old-school bakes. What more must we say about its location when it’s just opposite Beauty World Centre. Decked out with a huge golden signboard and sliding gates it exudes the rustic charm. The variety of goods they offer are not aplenty but no matter – they are known for their traditional biscuits and mini muffins. Their mini muffins come in several different flavours ranging from panda to lemon. Each mini muffin is encased with a star shaped edged foil, typical of how treats were served in the past.

Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry
Located in the hipster area of Tiong Bahru lies a gem filled with delicious Nyona pastries. Filled with the traditional chiffon cakes, nyonya kuehs and egg tarts, what shines above the rest are the nyonya kuehs. Two in particular are the ones to buy every single time, the Kueh Dar-Dar and the Ondeh-Ondeh. Don’t let the price fool you, for something this reasonably priced, it definitely packs a punch. The natural sweetness of the white coconut in the Kueh Dar-Dar is amplified with rock sugar, not overly sweet but just enough to have you craving for more. The Ondeh-Ondeh on the other hand is a literal flavour bomb – it explodes gula melaka upon being bitten into. Which goes to say you have to put the entire ball of goodness in your mouth to experience the gula melaka and the chewiness of the dough working in harmony.
